Sutton Vision- Mayors Chosen Charity for 2019- 2020

3rd June 2019

A councillor has become the Mayor of Sutton for the second time in four years.

Cllr Muhammad Sadiq, a businessman and primary school governor, was elected to the role on May 20 alongside the new Deputy Mayor, Cllr Annie Moral.

Cllr Sadiq, who was elected to the council for the Wallington South ward in 2014, previously served as Sutton’s Mayor during the 2015/16 municipal year.

He would complete the Mayoral term in 2016, and be elected as vice-chair of the council’s planning committee, before being voted back in as a councillor in the 2018 elections.

“I am honoured to have been re-elected as Mayor of Sutton for this municipal year [2019/20],” Cllr Sadiq said. “I have always tried to contribute to Sutton, whether through serving communities or in other ways.

“To be given the opportunity to serve the residents of Sutton again as Mayor is a privilege beyond words.”

His two chosen charities for this year are Sutton Vision and Oaks Way Centre, which both provide residents with care and support.

New Deputy Mayor, Cllr Moral, is serving in the role for the first time since being elected to the council in 2018.

Having lived in the borough since arriving from Middlesbrough in 1976, she worked in sheltered housing in Sutton for nearly 40 years before retiring in 2017.

“I am honoured to be appointed Deputy Mayor,” she said. “I look forward to building on the work of the many people in Sutton who have created the vibrant society in which we all take part and take pride.”
